Principles

Our values:

  • Concrete Action is a co-op that seeks to realise housing and spatial justice, fighting for a city that provides a good home for all. This means affordable, secure high quality housing, places to make, share and be together, and a vibrant ecology that supports a diversity of living things.
  • We practice solidarity and empathy through listening and learning. We believe that people and communities know best what they need and how to solve their problems, and so we seek to create resources and tools that support this.
  • We recognise housing and spatial injustice as bound up with racism, coloniality, patriarchy and other violences of capitalism, and that justice requires fighting larger battles and greater structural changes.

How we work:

  • Concrete Action projects work as independent ‘cells’ under a supportive umbrella. Any member of Concrete Action can propose and undertake a project that is in line with our values.
  • Each project contributes to building resources and capacities for collective action for housing and spatial justice.
  • We create possibilities for people to share what they know. We encourage replicability and generosity in the spirit of commoning and open source. That way, what we create can be adopted in new contexts.
  • We encourage re-use and sharing, seeking to minimise waste and consumption.
  • We support each other to make our work and working practices as accessible as possible.
  • We think carefully in each context in which we work about who might be excluded and why. This might lead us to change the way we work or the work we do. Where unjust exclusions are outside of our direct control, we will develop strategies to politicise and contest them.
